Like many businesses, Red Sock Productions is a product of a niche in the market.
In the early 1990’s, the new Independent radio stations were just finding their feet and by and large the choices for a prospective client looking for a good radio commercial was to hire an Advertising Agency with a top of the range creative team at a top of the range price, or go directly to the local station and have a rep write the copy and a DJ do the voice over for free.
While some of the bigger stations were doing excellent creative work, most regarded commercial production or “COMprod” as a loss making department that had to exist simply to get the client on air- so the standards suffered.
In between was Red Sock Productions. The idea was simple; produce creative and effective commercials for local radio at a cost that small local business could afford.
I had been in Pirate radio since my college days and had found a home in commercial production. I just loved the creative process, putting daft ideas down on paper and then adding funny voices and the wizardry that was reel to reel multi-track recording. It was a time of huge technological innovation with the 1st generation of digital studios that didn’t need 3 acres of “rack room” filled with wheezing analogue things that went clank!
In 1996 I set up my own studio and started to work on small projects. It just kept getting bigger and bigger and now years later I am just as comfortable working from home as in some hi-tech hermetically sealed voice booth in Baggot Street.
